In the heart of Italy, lies a city that has captivated the world for centuries – Rome. Known as the Eternal City, Rome is a destination that offers a perfect blend of ancient history, cultural richness, and modern charm. From its magnificent ruins to its mouth-watering cuisine, there are endless reasons to fall in love with this enchanting destination.
When you visit Rome, you are not just visiting a city, but diving into a world of la dolce vita. The phrase, which translates to "the sweet life," perfectly encapsulates the essence of this vibrant metropolis. From the moment you step foot in Rome, you will be surrounded by beautiful architecture, stunning art, and a zest for life that is infectious.
One cannot talk about Rome without mentioning its rich history and iconic landmarks. The city is home to historical sites that have played pivotal roles in shaping the world we live in today. Another iconic landmark is the Roman Forum, a sprawling complex of ruins that was once the center of political and social life in ancient Rome. Walking through the ruins, you will be transported back in time, imagining what life was like during the height of the Roman Empire.
No trip to Rome is complete without a visit to Vatican City, the smallest internationally recognized independent state in the world. Home to the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church, Vatican City is brimming with artistic masterpieces, most notably the Sistine Chapel with its remarkable ceiling painted by Michelangelo.
Aside from its historical significance, Rome is a city that knows how to indulge the senses. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills the air as you stroll through the cobblestone streets. The city is famous for its gelato, and it is impossible to resist the temptation of trying a scoop, or two, or three. Each bite is a taste of pure happiness.
Rome is also a paradise for food lovers. Its culinary scene is a blend of traditional Italian dishes and international flavors. From classic Roman pasta dishes such as carbonara and amatriciana to the mouth-watering pizzas topped with locally sourced ingredients, your taste buds will be in for a treat.
When evening falls, the city comes alive with its vibrant nightlife. Romans have perfected the art of enjoying life, and it shows in the numerous bars and clubs that fill the streets. Whether you prefer a cozy wine bar or a lively dance club, Rome offers something for everyone.
As you navigate the streets of Rome, you will encounter charming neighborhoods, each with its own distinct character. Trastevere, with its narrow winding streets and colorful buildings, is a bohemian enclave that exudes a laid-back atmosphere. Monti, on the other hand, is a hip neighborhood filled with trendy boutiques, art galleries, and chic eateries.
Exploring Rome can be overwhelming with its countless attractions, but the city's charm lies in its ability to surprise and delight at every turn. Whether it's stumbling upon a hidden gelateria or marveling at a piece of art tucked away in a quiet corner, Rome is a treasure trove of hidden gems.
When in Rome, take the time to slow down and soak in the beauty that surrounds you. Stop by a local café, sip on an espresso, and watch as the world passes by. Embrace the Italian way of life and let yourself be fully immersed in la dolce vita.
So, the next time you find yourself yearning for an adventure, remember that la dolce vita awaits in Rome. Explore its history, indulge in its cuisine, and embrace the joyous spirit of its people. When in Rome, you'll understand why it has been an inspiration for poets, artists, and dreamers throughout the ages.

The first book in a much loved Italian travel memoir trilogy which also includes the delightful See Naples and Die and Girl by Sea.
Winner of the Grollo Ruzzene Foundation Prize in the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards.
We've all dreamed of a new exotic life in a European city, but who actually goes? When in Rome shows what can happen when you are courageous - and perhaps crazy - enough to chase this dream.
With her thirtieth birthday on the horizon and her safe and comfortable life in Sydney outside her front door, Penelope Green decided it was now or never. Undaunted by the fact she spoke absolutely no Italian, had no job, no friends and nowhere to live, and armed only with an Italian English dictionary, irresistible optimism and a fair dash of bravery, she was determined to carve out her own slice of la dolce vita.
Both frank and funny, Penny tells how she plunged into the deep end of Roman life from her first giddy Vespa ride to daily struggles with the language and culture (not to mention a few lecherous locals),to seeing in her birthday with a kiss from her lover under the floodlit Colosseum.
'Written engagingly and with great honesty, Penelope Green's experiences definitely do not include restoring any farmhouses... Funny and full of heart' - The Australian Women's Weekly
'Descriptions of Rome so vivid you can smell the coffee' - Sun-Herald
Author Biography
Penelope Green was born in Sydney and worked as a print journalist around Australia for a decade before moving to Rome in 2002. Her first book, When in Rome, recounts her early experiences in the Eternal City. In 2005 she moved to Naples to work for ANSAmed, a Mediterranean news service. She found an apartment in the city's colourful Spanish Quarter, worked hard at mastering the Neapolitan dialect, and writing her second travel memoir, See Naples and Die. Girl by Sea completes Penny's Italian experience as she moves to the idyllic island of Procida, across the bay from Capri, with her Italian partner, Alfonso. The couple have now returned to Australia, where they are making a new life for themselves back in the Southern hemisphere. For more information visit penelopegreen.com.au
