A thrilling tale about a young woman coming into the knowledge of herself. Living in a normal world shrouded in magical mystery Zophia discovers an extraordinary secret threatening to tear her family apart. After the death of her uncle she finds herself faced with having to make the hardest decision of her life. But only time will tell if she will stand up and face her destiny, or run away from it.
Excerpt:
Zophia was overcome by the warmest sensation when she awoke suddenly in her bed. As fast as the feeling arrived, it faded, leaving only a memory in its wake. She closed her eyes tight and tried in vain to will herself back to sleep. A thick layer of sweat covered her face, and Zophia was a little upset she was up this early. The last thing she remembered was she was in the middle of dreaming. But that was ridiculous because Zophia never remembered her dreams. She clenched her eyes tighter and tried to recall what it been about, but it was like trying to catch a river’s worth of rain with cupped hands. All Zophia could grasp was that there was a man with the most intense fire in his dark brown eyes. Zophia held on to that piercing gaze, trying to remember anything else, but her mind was blank.
Still half asleep, Zophia opened her eyes and stretched, trying to gain her bearings. Immediately she noticed that something was seriously wrong. Her vision was clouded, and the air was too thick, making it hard for her to draw in air. At first, she could not wrap her mind around as to what could be the cause, but as she surveyed her room, sudden alarm brought her to full awareness. Just beyond her doorway leading into the hall, Zophia saw flickering orange lights dancing.
Fire!
The house was on fire. Adrenaline surged through Zophia’s body and pushed her grogginess away. The thick smoke billowing into the room from the air vent made it awfully hard to see. Instinctively, she rolled out of bed and hit the floor where she knew there would be more oxygen. Zophia had no choice but to blindly creep along the wall, inching her way to the window.
As more smoke entered the room, the harder it became for her to draw in air. In a fit of desperation, Zophia grabbed the chair next to her desk and hurled it at the windowpane. The glass shattered, and relief washed over her as fresh air rushed into the room, giving her a reprieve from suffocating.
She quickly grabbed one of her shirts and tied it around her nose and mouth before making her way to the door. Staying low to the floor, Zophia screamed for help and was met with silence. She reached for the doorknob and flinched, for it was more than a little hot to the touch. Flinging the door open, she was pushed back into the room from the intense heat.
“Zabrina! Uncle Darius! Where are you?” Zophia screamed out again, hoping that someone heard her now that the door was open.
