Separated from his friends and family, forced to relinquish his computer and mobile phone, Oliver is not happy. And to cap it all off, Oliver cannot sleep. He never wanted to come on this Scout camp anyway and cannot even think about how he will survive the next two weeks. But no matter how hard Oliver tries to fit in with his fellow Scouts and how difficult his stifling shyness makes it to strike up a conversation, nothing has prepared him to conquer the same challenges in a different century...

Finding himself at the first Scout camp on Brownsea Island with no idea as to how he got there, even less clue as to how to get back and with the whole of the terrifying twentieth century about to unfurl before him if he has to stay, Oliver has to look deep within him to find a true Scout.

Will he be able to find anything in common with the boys who know nothing of computers, tablets and the world wide web? Will he be able to rise to the challenges, as he knows he must to find a route home? Will he be able to leave an imprint on the world without affecting history?

This book came about as a bedtime story to accompany my son on a recent Scout camp. Nervous about how on earth he was going to get to sleep, he built the trip up into epic proportions, threatening not to go at all for the four weeks before they set off.

When asked what would help him get to sleep, he asked me to write a book. How could I refuse (even on two week’s notice!)?

Having come from a family of Guides and Scouts, a Guide leader myself, and a huge advocate of the worldwide Scouting movement, I began a story: to reassure my son that he was not alone in his fear of the unknown, but that was no reason not to venture forth; to remind us both about those who had taken those steps in the past and in whose shoes we were to tread; and to encourage thoughtful sleep after a day of new adventures.
It began as simply a bedtime story, but to us it has come to be so much more...
