Walking is not just a physical exercise; it is a journey to explore hidden gems and unravel the mysteries of the past. One such trail is the Dartmoor National Park, which spans across hundreds of square miles, encompassing rugged terrain, mysterious tors, and ancient ruins. The Dartmoor National Park is also home to various legends and tales that have been handed down through generations. From the eerie tales of the Hairy Hands haunting the B3212 road to the mysterious occurrences at Wistman's Wood, you will find yourself captivated by these stories and eager to uncover the truth.

Another enchanting walking trail in Devon is the South West Coast Path. Stretching over 600 miles, it is the longest national trail in England and offers spectacular views of the rugged coastline. As you meander along the path, you may stumble upon hidden caves, ancient castles, or even the remnants of shipwrecks lost at sea.

Devon's coastline is also steeped in history, with tales of smugglers, pirates, and daring adventures. Imagine yourself walking in the footsteps of these intriguing characters, traversing the same paths they once took, and feeling the echoes of their presence.

Amidst the history and mysteries, Devon is also renowned for its charming villages and market towns. Take a leisurely stroll through the narrow cobbled streets of Clovelly, a picturesque village that seems frozen in time. Admire the quaint cottages and soak in the peaceful ambiance as you uncover the stories of its inhabitants.

For the lovers of ancient legends, a visit to Tintagel Castle is a must. Set atop rugged cliffs on the North Cornwall coast, this castle is believed to be the birthplace of King Arthur. As you explore the ruins, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, you can't help but feel a sense of reverence for the legends that have been passed down through centuries.

With so much history, mysteries, and legends to explore, embarking on a meandering walking journey through Devon opens up a world of possibilities. The beauty of walking is that it allows you to slow down, to immerse yourself fully in your surroundings, and to truly connect with the history and mysteries that Devon holds.

So, put on your walking shoes, pack a picnic, and set off on an adventure of a lifetime. Meander through the captivating trails, listen to the whispers of the past, and let the history, mysteries, and legends of Devon unfold before your eyes.

Remember, walking is not just about the destination, but about the journey itself. And what better journey to embark on than one that takes you through the captivating history of Devon, filled with intriguing mysteries and ancient legends?

This book contains ten circular walks between the distances of 1.5 miles to 5.5 miles, each of the chapters as an easy to follow format, where to start and places or things to lookout for along the way. The chapters each covers something from history, a mystery or legend which in some cases can be extremely interesting. The terrain on the walks varies considerably from open fields, green lanes, woodland, country lanes or open moorland. So with this in mind be sure to dress sensibly with warm wet proof/cold resistant clothing, for example temperatures on the moors can be 5 degrees lower than the mainland. Most important make sure you wear good footwear, ideally walking boots to keep feet dry give good support for the feet and ankles on very uneven ground. Please whenever you are out and about make sure you follow the Countryside Code, gates are normally shut by the farmers to keep farm animals in, sometimes they may be left open so animals can reach food or water. So be sure to leave gates as you find them or follow instructions on any signs on the gate. On some of these walks with historical places be careful not to disturb ruins or historical sites because our heritage is for the future not just for the past.
