Aims, Methods, and New Directions in the Study of History
History is the study of past events, societies, and civilizations that have shaped the world we live in today. It plays a crucial role in our understanding of human progress, social dynamics, and cultural evolution. Historians employ various aims and methods to explore and interpret historical records, artifacts, and narratives, allowing us to gain insights into the lives of our ancestors and the events that have shaped our present reality.
The Aims of Historical Study
Historical research seeks to achieve specific aims in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of the past. These aims include:
- Understanding the past: The primary aim of historical study is to gain a deep understanding of past events, societies, and civilizations. By analyzing historical data, historians aim to uncover the complex factors that have influenced the course of history.
- Preserving cultural heritage: History helps us preserve our cultural legacy by documenting and studying the traditions, customs, and knowledge of past societies. Through this, we can ensure that our cultural heritage is safeguarded and passed down to future generations.
- Identifying patterns and trends: By studying historical patterns and trends, historians can identify recurrent themes and analyze the causes and effects of specific events. This allows us to learn from the past and make informed decisions for the future.
- Providing context: Historical study provides a context for understanding present-day societies. By examining how societies have developed and evolved through time, historians enable us to contextualize contemporary issues and phenomena.
The Methods of Historical Study
Historical research incorporates various methods to gather and analyze information from primary and secondary sources. These methods include:

- Archival research: Historians examine primary sources such as letters, diaries, official documents, and photographs to gain direct insights into the past. Archival research allows historians to reconstruct historical narratives and reveal the perspectives and experiences of individuals who lived in different time periods.
- Oral history interviews: Conducting interviews with individuals who have lived through significant events helps historians capture personal experiences and perspectives. Oral history interviews provide firsthand accounts that complement written records, offering a more comprehensive understanding of historical events.
- Historical analysis: Analyzing and interpreting historical sources allows historians to draw s, develop hypotheses, and construct narratives that explain the past. Historical analysis involves critical thinking, examining secondary sources, and considering different perspectives to form a comprehensive understanding of historical events.
- Comparative studies: Historians often engage in comparative studies, examining similarities and differences between different cultures, time periods, or regions. Comparative studies shed light on the factors that have shaped civilizations and allow historians to uncover universal patterns and processes in human history.
New Directions in Historical Research
The study of history is constantly evolving, and new directions of research have emerged to enhance our understanding of the past. Some of these new directions include:
- Environmental history: This field explores the relationship between humans and their natural environment throughout history. It seeks to understand how environmental changes have influenced societies and how human activities have impacted the environment.
- Digital humanities: With the advent of technology, historians are increasingly using digital tools and techniques to analyze and visualize historical data. Digital humanities allows for new forms of analysis and presents opportunities to uncover hidden patterns and connections within historical records.
- Postcolonial history: Postcolonial history focuses on examining the impact and legacies of colonialism on societies and cultures. It challenges traditional Eurocentric narratives and aims to provide a more inclusive understanding of historical events and processes.
- Public history: Public history aims to make history more accessible and engaging for a wider audience. It involves using historical research and narratives to create exhibitions, documentaries, and public events, ensuring that the study of history reaches beyond academia.
As the study of history continues to evolve, it is important to embrace new methods, perspectives, and directions to uncover previously unexplored aspects of the past. By doing so, we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of our collective history and its significance in shaping our present and future.

This classic to the study of history invites the reader to stand back and consider some of its most fundamental questions - what is the point of studying history? How do we know about the past? Does an objective historical truth exist and can we ever access it?
In answering these central questions, John Tosh argues that, despite the impression of fragmentation created by postmodernism in recent years, history is a coherent discipline which still bears the imprint of its nineteenth-century origins. Consistently clear-sighted, he provides a lively and compelling guide to a complex and sometimes controversial subject, while making his readers vividly aware of just how far our historical knowledge is conditioned by the character of the sources and the methods of the historians who work on them.
The sixth edition has been revised and updated with key new material including:
- a brand new chapter on public history
- sections on digitised sources and historical controversy
- discussion of topics including transnational history and the nature of the archive
- an expanded range of examples and case studies
- a comprehensive companion website providing valuable supporting material, study questions and a bank of primary sources.
Lucid and engaging, this edition retains all the user-friendly features that have helped to make this book a favourite with both students and lecturers, including marginal glosses, illustrations and suggestions for further reading. Along with its companion website, this is an essential guide to the theory and practice of history.
