There are a number of reasons why Shane Warne is held in such high esteem:
Skill
A large part of it is that he was an extraordinarily skilled cricketer. You could very reasonably argue he was one of the best spinners of all time, even one of the best bowlers. His accuracy was incredible (he rarely needed to 'loosen up', he was accurate from the first ball) and when the ball was not turning, he could use drift and bounce to bamboozle even the best of batsmen. He holds the record for the most wickets in a calendar year (96 in 2005),won a Man of the Match award in a World Cup final and was the first bowler to 700 wickets.
Flair
He also had a penchant for the dramatic. One only needs to witness his very first ball in England, which bowled the veteran Mike Gatting with a prodigiously turning leg spinner, to see this. He is a very charasmatic cricketer, interacting with his fans and critics, so much different from leg spinners of the past. He seemed to save his best for the biggest occasions, such as 40 wickets in that dramatic 2005 Ashes series, and the 1999 World Cup.
Success
There is no doubt that his talents were put to very good use in a ridiculously talented team. The Australian team of the mid 90s to the time Warne retired won just about every accolade and award they possibly could, dominating oppositions around the world. This is also the reason why when Australia was beaten in this time, it took remarkable brilliance (Lara's exploits in the West Indies, Dravid and Laxman in 2001).
