London Transport, a government-owned entity, played a crucial role in the development and operation of these double deckers. Over the years, various models and designs were introduced, each with its own unique features and improvements.
The Classic Red Routemaster
One of the most iconic models of London Country double deckers is the Routemaster. Designed by the renowned architect Sir Frederick Gibberd, the Routemaster was introduced in 1954 and soon became synonymous with London's bus network.
Featuring a distinct curved exterior, open rear platform, and stylish interior, the Routemaster stood apart from other buses of its time. Passengers could hop on and off the bus at any point, thanks to its traditional "hop-on, hop-off" design.
Despite facing some challenges in the latter part of the 20th century, Routemasters remain in service on select heritage routes, allowing locals and tourists alike to experience a slice of London's history.
Modern Innovations
While the Routemaster holds a special place in London's transportation history, modern innovations have transformed the double decker bus experience. With advancements in technology, these buses now incorporate features like air conditioning, low emission engines, Wi-Fi connectivity, and even USB charging points.
State-of-the-art facilities, comfortable seating, and panoramic views from the top deck have made London Country double deckers a popular choice for both locals and tourists. The buses not only provide a convenient mode of travel but also offer a unique perspective of the city's streets, allowing passengers to soak in its beauty while on the move.
The London Country Experience
For many visitors to London, riding a London Country double decker bus is an essential part of the experience. The buses traverse through key tourist destinations like Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, Trafalgar Square, and the Houses of Parliament, offering an excellent opportunity for sightseeing.
Moreover, with their frequent services and extensive routes, London Country buses provide a comprehensive network that connects the city's different neighborhoods. Whether one is traveling to historic sites, commercial centers, or residential areas, these buses offer a reliable and convenient mode of transport.
London Country Bus Tours
For a truly immersive experience, many bus tour operators in London offer guided tours on these famous double deckers. These tours provide fascinating insights into the city's history, architecture, and culture as expert guides take visitors on a journey through London's past and present.
As the bus winds its way through the city's streets, passengers can enjoy panoramic views from the upper deck, capturing memorable photographs and experiencing the vibrant energy of London.
London Country double deckers have not only served as a practical mode of transportation but have also become an iconic symbol of the city. Their rich history, unique features, and enduring charm make them an integral part of London's cultural heritage.
Whether you are a local resident or a curious traveler, a ride on a London Country double decker is an experience that should not be missed. So hop on board, take a seat, and let the bus transport you through the heart of this remarkable city.

This books concentrates on the double deckers buses in service with London Country from it's beginning on the 1st January 1970 until it was split into separate units ready for privatisation in 1986.
We start with the rear platformed vehicles acquired from London Transport such as the RT and Routemaster (both bus and coach form) and move on to the vehicles used to replace them, upgrade the fleet and convert to one man operation such as the Daimler Fleetline, Leyland Atlantean, Bristol VR and Leyland Olympian.
This book doesn't go into too much technical detail about each vehicle but is an overview of each type mainly to accompany my technical type drawings.
