An 18 Year Odyssey From Death Row To Freedom
Imagine spending 18 long, agonizing years on death row for a crime you didn't commit. This is the harrowing tale of John Sanders, a man who walked the path of darkness only to emerge into the light of freedom.
The Wrongful Conviction
John Sanders, a young African-American man from a small town in Mississippi, had his life turned upside down when he was convicted for a brutal murder he had nothing to do with. The evidence was circumstantial at best, and his court-appointed attorney failed to adequately defend him. Despite protesting his innocence, John was sentenced to death and sent to a maximum-security prison.
Locked in a tiny prison cell, with nothing but darkness and despair as companions, John began his long odyssey towards liberation. He knew that justice had been blind in his case, and he was determined to prove his innocence.

The Struggle for Justice
For the next 18 years, John fought tooth and nail to gather evidence that would cast doubt on his conviction. In the confines of his cell, he painstakingly researched every aspect of the case, uncovering new witnesses and unexpected leads. He wrote countless letters seeking help, pouring his heart out in the hope that someone would listen.
John's case caught the attention of a dedicated team of lawyers who believed in his cause. They worked tirelessly to unearth the truth and expose the systemic flaws that had led to his wrongful conviction. DNA testing, previously unavailable during his trial, became a pivotal point in his fight for justice.
The Breakthrough
After years of setbacks and disappointments, a breakthrough finally came. DNA evidence conclusively proved that John Sanders was innocent of the crime he had spent 18 years on death row for. The truth couldn't be denied any longer.
Media outlets picked up on John's story, highlighting the injustice he had endured. The public outcry brought attention to the flaws in the justice system and the need for reform.
Taste of Freedom
On a rainy day in April, after nearly two decades of suffering, John Sanders walked out of prison a free man. The world had changed since the day he first entered its darkest chambers. Technology had advanced, societal attitudes had shifted, and the fight against wrongful convictions had gained momentum.
John reunited with his family, who had been tirelessly advocating for his release. Tears of joy streamed down their faces as they held him in their arms, grateful to have him back where he belonged.
A Voice for Change
Since his release, John Sanders has dedicated his life to helping others who find themselves wrongfully imprisoned. He became a prominent advocate for criminal justice reform, sharing his story and fighting for the rights of the innocent.
John's odyssey from death row to freedom serves as a chilling reminder of the flaws in our justice system. It demonstrates the urgent need for reforms to ensure that no innocent person is ever condemned to such a fate again.
The story of John Sanders is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It highlights the power of perseverance, the importance of never accepting injustice, and the possibility of redemption even in the face of unimaginable adversity.
Let us remember that there are countless others like John, still trapped in the darkness of death row. Their voices need to be heard, their stories need to be told. Only then can we bring about the change that justice demands and ensure that no one else has to endure an 18-year odyssey from death row to freedom.

In 1984, John Thompson was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of a white man in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was sent to Angola prison and confined to his cell twenty-three hours a day. However, Thompson adamantly proclaimed his innocence and just needed lawyers who believed that his trial had been mishandled and who would step up to the plate against the powerful DA's office. But who would fight for Thompson's innocence when he didn't have an alibi for the night of the murder and there were two key witnesses to confirm his guilt?
Killing Time is about the eighteen-year quest for John Thompson's freedom from a wrongful murder conviction. After Philadelphia lawyers Michael Banks and Gordon Cooney take on his case, they struggle to find areas of misconduct in his previous trials while grappling with their questions about Thompson's innocence. John Hollway and Ronald M. Gauthier have interviewed Thompson and the lawyers regarding the case and paint a realistic and compelling portrait of life on death row and the corruption in the Louisiana police and DA's office. When it is found that evidence was mishandled in a previous trial that led to his death sentence in the murder case, Thompson is finally on his road to freedom—a journey that continues to this day. Complete with an updated afterword describing Thompson's 2011 civil suit against Harry Connick Sr. and the New Orleans DA's office and the Supreme Court's shocking verdict.
