Whether we want to admit it or not, we are constantly judging others. From the moment we set eyes on a person, our brains start making assumptions and evaluations based on their appearance, body language, and the way they interact with the world around them. This natural instinct of categorizing individuals based on our first impressions has both positive and negative implications.

When we meet someone new, our brain quickly tries to place them into a familiar box. It searches for cues that help us understand their personality, social standing, and even their intentions towards us. Often, this judgment happens unconsciously, and we may not even be aware of the assumptions we are making.

However, it is important to recognize that our initial judgments might not always be accurate or fair. We tend to rely on societal norms, stereotypes, and preconceived notions when forming these opinions, which can lead to biased judgments based on someone's appearance or other superficial factors.

Physical attractiveness, for example, can significantly influence how we perceive others. Numerous studies have shown that attractive individuals are often seen as more likable, competent, and trustworthy. This bias, known as the "halo effect," can have profound implications in many areas of life, including hiring decisions, personal relationships, and even criminal justice proceedings.

On the flip side, those who do not meet society's beauty standards may face unfair judgments and discrimination. This can have a negative impact on their self-esteem, mental health, and overall quality of life. Our society places a great emphasis on physical appearance, often overlooking other qualities that truly define a person.

It is crucial to challenge our biases and preconceived notions when forming judgments about others. We must strive to see beyond surface-level traits and consider an individual's character, values, and actions. By actively engaging with people from diverse backgrounds and engaging in meaningful conversations, we can broaden our horizons and foster understanding and empathy.

Another significant factor in how we see others is our own perspective and personal experiences. Our past interactions, beliefs, and cultural upbringing shape how we interpret and relate to the world around us. It is essential to recognize that our perception is subjective and may not always align with reality.

Technology and social media have also played a role in how we see others. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook often present idealized and curated versions of people's lives, leading to feelings of inadequacy and increased pressure to conform to certain beauty standards. It is crucial to remember that these online personas are just highlights and do not provide a complete picture of someone's reality.

So, how do we see others? It is a complex process influenced by a multitude of factors, both internal and external. To truly understand someone, we must strive to look beyond surface-level judgments and engage in deep, meaningful connections. Let us embrace diversity, challenge our biases, and celebrate the unique qualities that make each individual special.

Remember, every person has a story to tell, and it is our privilege to listen with an open heart and mind.

How Do You See Us is a personal narrative written by Amy Nickerson, M.A. detailing and analyzing what she and her family have seen and experienced as it relates to issues of law enforcement. This is not Black vs. Blue. This isn’t about sides – the black side or the blue side. This is not an attack on the overall institution of law enforcement. Nor is this a scathing rebuke of every white law enforcement officer. As Amy states in her book, "This is about my perspective, my innermost feelings about how I am viewed as a Black person in America, why I feel vulnerable around police officers, and how it got this way." Amy Nickerson recounts numerous encounters with police officers as well as ordinary white citizens insistent on policing black people.
