The Inside Story Of My Battle Against The NCAA
For years, I have been entangled in a fierce battle against the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) - an organization that wields immense power in college sports while often leaving student-athletes behind. Today, I am here to share with you the inside story of my relentless fight against the NCAA and how it has shaped my life and the lives of many others.
An Ambitious Dream
Like so many aspiring athletes, my dream from a young age was to play a sport at the collegiate level and represent my university with pride. I poured my heart, soul, and countless hours of dedication into my chosen sport, pushing my limits and striving for excellence. Finally, that coveted scholarship offer arrived, and my journey as a student-athlete began.
Little did I know that the NCAA's looming presence would soon cast a dark shadow over my dreams.

The Reality of Being a Student-Athlete
Being a student-athlete is an incredible opportunity, but it comes with its fair share of challenges. The NCAA rules and regulations are designed to protect the integrity of college athletics, but often fail to address the welfare of the individuals who make those sports possible - the athletes themselves.
The demands placed on student-athletes are extraordinary. Balancing rigorous academic schedules with grueling athletic commitments is a constant juggling act. Our lives revolve around practices, games, and mandatory team activities, leaving little time for personal growth, mental well-being, or even part-time employment to supplement our meager scholarships.
The NCAA's "amateurism" rules further exacerbate the problem. While colleges and universities rake in billions of dollars from television rights, sponsorships, and merchandise sales, student-athletes are prohibited from receiving any form of compensation beyond their scholarships. This system leaves us trapped in a cycle of exploitation, unable to fully benefit from our athletic abilities.
The Breaking Point
Many student-athletes, including myself, have reached a breaking point, realizing that we must fight back against the injustices of the NCAA. We have banded together, forming coalitions and advocacy groups to demand change and fair treatment.
One particular landmark moment in my battle against the NCAA was when I decided to share my story with the world. Sparking a fire that spread like wildfire, my personal account of the struggles I faced as a student-athlete resonated with countless others who had endured similar hardships. Social media became our weapon of choice, enabling us to amplify our collective voice and raise awareness about the systemic issues within college sports.
Challenging the Status Quo
Our battle against the NCAA is not merely about seeking personal gain; it's about fighting for the future of all student-athletes. Together, we are challenging the status quo and demanding reforms that will enable athletes to thrive both on and off the playing field.
Our demands include fair compensation for student-athletes, access to healthcare and mental health resources, extended scholarship and educational support, and greater representation in decision-making processes. We firmly believe that these changes will pave the way for a more equitable college sports landscape.
Hurdles and Triumphs
This battle against the NCAA has been anything but easy. We have faced numerous hurdles, including backlash from those who fear change and the NCAA's relentless attempts to maintain its hold on college sports.
However, we have also celebrated triumphs along the way. Our collective efforts have compelled the NCAA to reevaluate some of its policies, leading to small but significant steps forward. We have witnessed universities and coaches speaking up, recognizing the need for reform, and taking action to support their student-athletes.
Looking Towards the Future
As our battle against the NCAA rages on, I remain hopeful. Change may not come overnight, but the persistence and resilience of student-athletes will prevail. We are the driving force behind college sports, and we will continue to push for a system that recognizes and values our contributions.
To all those who have supported me and joined me in this fight, thank you. Together, we are making strides towards a future where student-athletes are empowered, respected, and fairly treated.

“Like Curt Flood and Oscar Robertson, who paved the way for free agency in sports, Ed O’Bannon decided there was a principle at stake… O’Bannon gave the movement to reform college sports…passion and purpose, animated by righteous indignation.” —Jeremy Schaap, ESPN journalist and New York Times bestselling author
In 2009, Ed O’Bannon, once a star for the 1995 NCAA Champion UCLA Bruins and a first-round NBA draft pick, thought he’d made peace with the NCAA’s exploitive system of “amateurism.” College athletes generated huge profits, yet—training nearly full-time, forced to tailor coursework around sports, often pawns in corrupt investigations—they saw little from those riches other than revocable scholarships and miniscule chances of going pro. Still, that was all in O’Bannon’s past…until he saw the video game NCAA Basketball 09. As avatars of their college selves—their likenesses, achievements, and playing styles—O’Bannon and his teammates were still making money for the NCAA. So, when asked to fight the system for players past, present, and future—and seeking no personal financial reward, but rather the chance to make college sports more fair—he agreed to be the face of what became a landmark class-action lawsuit.
Court Justice brings readers to the front lines of a critical battle in the long fight for players’ rights while also offering O’Bannon’s unique perspective on today’s NCAA recruiting scandals. From the basketball court to the court of law facing NCAA executives, athletic directors, and “expert” witnesses; and finally to his innovative ideas for reform, O’Bannon breaks down history’s most important victory yet against the inequitable model of multi-billion-dollar “amateur” sports.
