Army Doctrine Reference Publication ADRP 1-02 Terms and Military Symbols constitutes approved Army doctrinal terminology and symbology for general use. It builds on the foundational doctrine established in Army Doctrine Publication (ADP) 1-02.
The principal audience for ADRP 1-02 is all members of the profession of Arms. Commanders and staffs of Army headquarters serving as joint task force or multinational headquarters should also refer to applicable joint or multinational doctrine concerning the range of military operations and joint or multinational forces. Trainers and educators throughout the Army will also use this publication.
ADRP 1-02 also provides a single standard for developing and depicting hand drawn and computer-generated military symbols for situation maps, overlays, and annotated aerial photographs for all types of military operations. It is the Army proponent publication for all military symbols and complies with Department of Defense (DOD) Military Standard (MIL-STD) 2525D. The symbology chapters of this ADRP focus primarily on military symbols applicable to Army land operations. When communicating instructions to subordinate units, commanders and staffs from company through corps echelons should use this publication as a dictionary of operational terms and military symbols.
ADRP 1-02 is organized as follows:
Chapter 1 presents terms.
Chapter 2 presents acronyms, abbreviations, and country codes.
Chapter 3 introduces military symbology basics.
Chapters 4 through 7 provide icons for units, individuals, organizations, equipment, installations, and activities.
Chapter 8 introduces control measure symbols.
Chapter 9 discusses tactical mission tasks.
Chapter 10 discusses the course of action sketch.

Definitions applicable to the Army only.
Joint (DOD) definitions commonly used in Army publications.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) definitions commonly used in Army publications.
